Susanne – Sex Worker

December 15, 2009

susanneMoellerWhat is(was) your professional/stage/working name?

My real name is Susanne Møller

What city(ies) do you work in now (if you’re still working)?

I am working in Copenhagen, Denmark

How old are you now?

I am 45

At what age did you engage in your first professional sexual experience?

My first professional sexual experience I had at the age of 40

Describe your first professional sexual experience, including what happened, how you felt, what you were thinking, how you felt afterward.

I had, like many other women been fantasizing about being a hooker. I knew nothing about it, and thought that it must be degrading, but still had sexual fantasies about it. So I decided to try it, just for fun, as a part of a sex-game between me and my husband. I searched the Internet and found a place where they advertised with “grown, danish, women.”  I am all three, I thought, and sent a mail to the clinic. To my surprise they answered back and we arranged a meeting same day.

Next day I had the key to the clinic, I went there alone, borrowed a menu some of the other sexworkers at the place had left – and trembling I opened the door for the first client in the waiting room. “Yes, how can I help you?” I said, and he was kind to explain to me. :-)

All the customers that day were very kind, and I think they wanted to protect me a bit … almost all of them warned me against the other customers – said they would take advantage of me because I was new. :-)

At the end of my shift, I had a lot of money – and had experienced a lot of sex with nice men, most of them men that easily could have persuaded me to have sex with them for free.

At what age did you entertain the first (serious) thoughts of going into sex work?

I have never had any serious thoughts of going into sex work before I experienced what it was like.

What made you decide to enter the line of work you’re in?

The first day was fun, and I continued for 6 months – half a day every week – but still just for the fun of it. One day I realized that I had made so much money that I would have to register a firm. This is the law here in Denmark – if you make more than 50.000 kr over a year you have to register as a firm and pay a special kind of tax. If I did this, it would no longer just be for the fun of it. It would no longer be a secret game between me and my husband. I would be doing it to make a living out of it.

This is when I decided to be a sex worker. I thought it over carefully and I decided to stop working as a nurse and concentrate on sex work

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy the liberty. The fact that I am in charge. I decide how much I want to work, who I want to work with, and what kind of money I want for it.

I also enjoy the sex. I enjoy meeting a lot of different people and connecting to them through sex. I enjoy the short but intense meetings.

What do you like the least about your work?

For a long time I had to keep it a secret from my family and friends. I was protecting them from the stigma and shame connected with sex work. I no longer keep it a secret and every one has accepted it.

I don’t like that you in Denmark do not have the same rights as every body else, even though you have the same duties (pay tax) and even though sex work is legal. I don’t like that everybody thinks I am victim, and if I refuse to be a victim I am accused of being a cold-hearted luxus-hooker that doesn’t care about my college, about other peoples marriage – that I am only in it for the money, that I am not representative for other sex workers – should keep quiet and be ashamed.

Does your family know what you do? If so, what do they think?

Yes they know. They also know me and can see that I haven’t changed.  They can see I am happy doing what I do, and are satisfied with this.

Do you have a spouse, partner or significant other, and if so, do they know about what you do? If so, what do they think?

My husband knows about this. From the start this was a game between him and me. Now it is no longer a game, but my business and he supports me.

How much longer do you think you’ll do what you’re doing now, and what are your plans for when you quit? If you’ve already left, what made you decide to leave and what did you decide to do for work when you left?

It was an experience for me, starting in this business so late and I actually didn’t think I could attract customers at my age. But I can, to my own surprise and I continue this experience. I will stay in the business as long as I like it and as long as I can get customers enough to make a living of it

Describe your educational background.

I am educated as a nurse and have been working as a nurse for 15 years.

If you had to go back and tell your younger self (mid to late teens) that you’d be doing what you’re doing now (assuming you’re still working in the sex industry), what do you think your younger self would say about it?

What went wrong? :-)

What advice would you give someone who was looking to get into your line of sex work?

Seek help – talk to other people already in the business – try and find a sex worker organization in your country and contact them for advice.
